Barcelona: Public and Private Schools of Higher Learning

If you're planning a trip to Spain, then make it complete by visiting the city of Barcelona. Barcelona functions as the capital of Spain and has the second highest population in the entire country! It has also become an international city, due to its significance in fields such as finance and international trade. This Spanish city has become a major tourist destination within Europe, and has become renowned for various architectural works and as the site of the 1992 Summer Olympic games.
In addition, Barcelona contains a well-structured system of public universities. The most renowned one is the University of Barcelona. Founded in 1450, the school had already existed for roughly half a century as a medical school. The medical school (and future university) was founded due to a letter of request that King Martin the Humane had penned in 1398. Later, the university began to flourish in the 1530s, when the school began to construct a new university building. During subsequent years, the University of Barcelona underwent various reforms that significantly improved the quality of the institution, and resulted in its expansion. It also remained the only university in Catalonia, until the year 1971.
Another major university in Barcelona is the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, or Barcelona Tech. The focus of this school is internationalization, as it contains more international PhD students than any other technical university in the country. Barcelona Tech also has many affiliations with other quality universities throughout Europe. The institution was founded in 1971. Today it has over 20 campuses throughout the Catalonia region, more than 30,000 students, and approximately 2,500 staff members. The Polytechnic University of Catalonia also contains MareNostrum, one of Europe's most powerful supercomputers.
A significantly younger university is Pompeu Fabra University, which is another public university located in Barcelona. It was founded in 1990 and is named after Pompeu Fabra, a Catalan gymnast. Some of the school's most prominent programs include Economic, Business Management and Administration, and Business Science. In fact, Pompeu Fabra University leads the nation's top-ranked school in various fields such as Law, Political Science, Business, and Economics. While the school was founded in 1990, it has quickly become one of the nation's leaders among institutions of higher learning.

Among private schools of higher learning, the Ramon Llull University has become one of the city's leading institutions. It currently contains several colleges that specialize in various fields. In fact, the Wall Street Journal has ranked it multiple times as the world's top international business school. The school was named for Ramon Llull, a renowned philosopher and writer who was born in the 1400s.
